About Us

The founder of Music Unveiled, Shane Bowles, discovered his love for teaching at age 18 as a freshman in college, and since then has taught hundreds of private students as well as courses in keyboard harmony and aural skills at Utah State University. As a university instructor, Shane received the highest teacher rating amongst professors of the USU music department with an extraordinary student evaluation rating of 5.9 out of 6. Students in his sections averaged a full letter grade higher than students from other sections who took the same final. His fascination with finding and developing the best curriculums, his eagerness to impart knowledge, and his deep love of music is contagious to his private students, and the teachers he frequently addresses in lectures and clinics.

As a competitor and performer, Shane is no stranger to the concert stage. He was a quarter finalist in the 1999 Gina Bachauer Young Artist International Piano Competition, and is the winner of numerous state and national honors. In the fall of 2000, Shane performed as soloist with the Utah Symphony, and in 2003 Shane received an invitation to perform as soloist in the Isaac Stern auditorium of New Yorkʼs Carnegie Hall, which he did to a standing ovation.

Shane now devotes the majority of his time to writing his own method books. He has a number of books and practice aids available for young students in the private studio setting, as well as books used for group piano classes in universities. When not teaching, Shane enjoys spending time with his wife and children and composing.

His vision for Music Unveiled began while attending college. He felt so discouraged by the way the world was teaching music. He could see that music was so simple and college and current methodology made it so complex. Students everywhere were confused and frustrated. He knew there must be a better way. This is where his quest began to find the best way for students to learn music.

Students needed to recognize musical structure instead of one hundred tiny black dots on a page. They needed to recognize structure and experience how it works. This would make sight-reading and memorizing so much easier. Students would understand what the chords meant, they would understand what the composer was thinking having already experienced the chord structures and patterns exhibited in their music. This is what inspired Shane to write Keyboard Foundations, which truly gives the student a rock solid foundation and understanding of music.

After searching through many methods for note reading, he felt that instead of explaining, explaining, explaining about the note, simply teach them how to play the note. Keep it simple and then explain all the details after the action is deep-rooted in their mind. They are trained in musical skills through daily note drills and a large selection of music to read each week. Making it so they can read music instead of only a few songs.

Shane created CD accompaniments to go along with every book to engrain rhythm and counting from the first lesson. In order for students to sight-read well they must be able to keep good rhythm. This helps students to know how to accompany and never get a bad habit of stopping in the middle of a performance to fix their mistake. Also CDʼs make practice sessions much more enjoyable for students.

Any student who wants to play piano will love learning this way. They learn to play and understand the piano, instead of learning about the piano. Music Unveiled is theory and note reading in action. We are continuously searching and praying for the best ways to teach music. Our mission here at Music Unveiled is to bless the lives of those around us and assist others in doing the same.
